When I was six years old, I saw a picture of the Chocolate Hills and instantly thought, “I want to go there someday.” For years, Bohol existed only in my dreams. An island filled with hills that change color, tiny creatures with big eyes, and adventures waiting to happen.

After 30 years, I finally had the chance to turn that wish into reality. I visited Bohol for the first time with my family and it was everything I hoped for and more. *cue tears*

First Impressions: Warm Smiles and Clean Streets

From the moment we arrived, Bohol welcomed us with clean, peaceful surroundings and genuinely kind locals. It felt safe, organized, and calm; like the perfect place to slow down and just be present.

1. Chocolate Hills: Just As Magical as I Imagined

No picture or video can truly prepare you for the sight of the Chocolate Hills in person. As we stood at the viewing deck, I almost cried. There they were, small mounds rolling across the landscape na napakacute!!!! that was really my first thought, ang cute nila! It felt surreal to finally see something I had imagined for so long.

Don’t skip the climb to the top view deck—it’s worth every step for that panoramic moment even if it’s 200 steps. hehe

2. Tarsier Conservation Area: Tiny Creatures, Big Impact

I knew tarsiers were small but I was not prepared when I finally saw them in person, too cute to be real! At the Tarsier Conservation Area in Loboc, I saw them up close. ANG LIIT!  Please respect the signs to be quiet and avoid flash photography. They’re sensitive creatures and deserve peace in their natural habitat.

It’s a humbling and heartwarming experience to witness wildlife like this.

3. Loboc River Cruise: A Feast for the Eyes and the Stomach

One of the highlights of our trip was the Loboc River Cruise. It’s a floating restaurant gliding down a wide river, surrounded by thick tropical foliage, while you’re served a buffet of Filipino food and serenaded by live acoustic music.

Then somewhere along the way, you will be entertained by locals who can teach you how to dance the tinikling!

It’s not just a meal it’s a cultural experience. Don’t miss it!

4. Hinagdanan Cave: A Natural Wonder Hidden Below

Hinagdanan Cave was amazing! This limestone cave with its natural pool, stalactites, and shafts of sunlight piercing through the ceiling gave us a sense of quiet awe. The water is swimmable (though cold!), and the guides are both funny and informative. Our guide was suuuper funny and had us laughing the whole time. It’s a short stop, but a memorable one.

Tip: Wear non-slip shoes, bring a towel, and wear a proper swimsuit para madaling matuyo! There’s no cr in the area and you will have to change clothes infront of other people.

Final Thoughts: I’m Definitely Coming Back

Bohol captured my heart. Every stop, from the hills and caves to the rivers and wildlife, reminded me of why I fell in love with this place as a child.

There’s still so much more I want to explore: the beaches of Panglao, dolphin watching in Pamilacan, historical churches, and hidden gems we didn’t have time for.

This trip was just the beginning.

P.S. Don’t forget to buy some Asin Tibuok as a souvenir!
